Oxford United are looking to reach the second tier of English football this weekend for the first time in 25 years.

The Yellows will make the fabled trip to Wembley Stadium on Saturday afternoon to face Bolton Wanderers in the League One Play-Off Final.

Excitement is rife across the city with local businesses, politicians and even landmarks all showing their support for the team.

Councillor Susan Brown, leader of Oxford City Council, said: "The last time Oxford United reached the Play-Off Final was in 2020, it was behind closed doors and it wasn’t to be their day.

“Saturday will be different. Wembley will be packed out with a fantastic atmosphere and I hope we’ll see a different result.

“Bolton Wanderers are tough opponents so I know you’ll join me in wishing the U’s the best of luck and a day we’ll remember for years to come.

“Come on you Yellows!”

Elsewhere businesses in the city were showing their support with the club’s colours as shops in the Covered Market donned flags in their windows.

Bill Hardiman was selling flags and scarves on Cornmarket Street and was feeling confident ahead of the game after securing a ticket.

“I think it's even stevens really. It could go either way,” he said.

Other blue and yellow items including shirts alongside more flags were being hung from houses across the city including one home on North Hinksey Lane.

A flag featuring the club crest was also flown at Oxford Castle above the city on Thursday morning to celebrate the occasion.

Posting a video and photographs of the effort, a spokesperson for Oxford United said: “This city is All United.

“A big thank you to Oxford Castle for flying the club's flag above the city this morning.”

The Wembley match is set to kick off at 4.15pm on Saturday and will be televised live on Sky Sports Football from 3.30pm and on Main Event from 5.30pm on.

For those fans travelling to the stadium, there will be no trains to Wembley for Oxford Railway Station.

Instead, the rail company is set to run a high-capacity train service leaving from Oxford Parkway for Oxford United's League One play-off final against Bolton Wanderers.

It will stop at Bicester Village and Thame and Haddenham before heading to London Marylebone and Wembley Stadium on Saturday.

If fans want to get a special memento to remember the occasion by then the Oxford United club shop has a special Wembley range instore featuring shirts, scarves and bucket hats.

The club shop’s hours have also been extended to the later closing time of 7pm to ensure fans can get ready for the big match.
